FOCUS

Located in a high growth area and with five new neighborhood developments plus a new high school and retirement village, Lanes Chapel United Methodist Church decided it was time to expand their current facility to meet the future growth of the congregation as well as the local community's expanding needs. With this goal in mind, Lanes Chapel purchased an additional 24 acres adjacent to their current property. The first priority of this project was the need for a master plan that would address current and future needs f or expansion.

Lanes Chapel's location on a major north-s outh thoroughfare, with future plans for construction of an east-west corridor, created a busy route with high visibility from all directions. Top priority for the planning of this project was to take advantage of all site amenities, especially visual exposure from three strategic vantage points, construct a new sanctuary, education facilities, indoor and outdoor fellowship areas, and convert the existing auditorium for use by the youth in the congregation, thus utilizing the property to its fullest potential.

STRATEGY

The architectural character of Lanes Chapel's current facility was the starting place for designing the new construction and elevations of future buildings were provided in the master plan to establish complementary architectural detail. While designing the new sanctuary, internal expansion as well as the potential for increasing the building footprint was calculated into the design.

In addition to building needs, detailed site studies were done to analyze topography, vehicular and pedestrian flow on and off site, exi sting vegetation, drainage, solar exposure, site views and other special features. This programming process helped us to understand the dynamics and full potential of the site. With this information, the master plan was produced to accommodate not only the future needs of the church but also ancillary opportunities such as retirement housing as well as recreational and athletic opportunities for the church and the community.
