FOCUS

Emmanuel Baptist Church purchased an 18-acre site with visibility and access from two major thoroughfares. While the site itself affords high impact visibility, the character of the site was densely populated with towering pine trees, offering a woodsy, secluded feeling.

STRATEGY

The first building phase and future expansions were planned as pods, accommodating the woodsy, organic nature of the site. By incorporating small pod-type buildings, building mass and coverage became more site sensitive.

Although "low key" was the order of the day, vertical elements at the sanctuary were introduced in response to the vertical composition of the pine trees. This height emphasizes the vertical venue of the site and it also gives a visual presence to arterial traffic.

Natural materials of stone and heavy timber were used to further visually tie the building to the natural environment. Large areas of glass were used to offer transparency and reflections of nature surrounding the building. Organic forms forged out of both natural and manmade elements coexist in harmony, enhancing the spiritual nature of the building and the surrounding land.
